“I was a senior filmmaker but this training has turned me into a professional.  Thank you Mediavision Academy and UNESCO,”  lamented Mingi Moses from Bunyoro Kitara kingdom.

It was all smiles yesterday 11th January 2024 during the pass out of 144 graduates of the Filmmaking Fundamentals for Culture online course at the Uganda National Cultural Center (National Theatre).  The pass out was graced by Dr. Agoi Rosie the Secretary General of Uganda National Commission for UNESCO who cautioned the graduates to use the acquired knowledge as a catalyst to better their lives and promote culture in their communities. Mediavision Academy partnered with UNESCO in 2023 to build the capacity of these filmmakers after identifying gaps in the preservation and promotion of the Ugandan culture.  Uganda has over 61 ethnic communities that are recognized in the constitution, but their cultures and heritage of are hardly documented for the current and future generations.  On the other hand these cultures offer an incredible source of original stories for film.  The graduates are therefore going to act as documentation agents by using film to create compelling stories with a cultural element.

The training commenced on 9th August 2023 at Mediavision Academy and ended November 15th 2023, running 5 course units including Cinema Studies, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Video Editing and Heritage/Culture studies. It was facilitated by experts in the fields relevant to the film industry in Uganda.

Being that the course was an online, this day provided a chance for participants to interact face to face with each other and with their tutors.  Shortly before participants were awarded certificates, they created four short films using their phones to show case the learned skills.  The films were screened causing a lot of excitement. “I was a senior filmmaker but this training has turned me into a professional.  Thank you Mediavision Academy and UNESCO,” said Bingi Moses a student from Bunyoro Kitara kingdom.
