Run for the Girl Child

Today Sunday 28th May 2023, streets of Kampala city were colored red by the absa 7 Hills Run.  It was organised to keep the vulnerable girl child in school.  The Executive Director of Kampala City Council Authority, Dorothy Kisaka flagged off the runners.  “I am not a walker like someone said.  I am here to run for the girl child,” she stated in her remarks.   I personally chose to participate following the countless cases of girl school dropouts I have documented in my filmmaking career. Most cases involve marriage.  In some vulnerable communities, the girl child is given the last priority when it comes to school.  In fact she is looked at as an asset for bride wealth.   This is what prompted my participation. I want to support any initiative that comes out to reverse this situation and that’s what this run is doing.  Interestingly at Mediavision Academy, girls make 40% of the enrollment and which is likely to increase.  We believe girls can effectively add value to the Uganda film sector given the current contribution. We have more female directors today than ever before.      I commend absa bank for organizing the run.  It is the first edition but filled with lots of fun.  Great breakfast, massage, drinks, eats, bouncing castles and entertainment from Vinka and Sheebah.  I was excited to bump into my old school friends, make new ones and talk about my filmmaking busines.  I can’t wait for the second edition.
